Comfort Zone Vs Change

Going out of my comfort zone and making a change is the most dreaded thing for me, and I guess for most of you too. Figuring out many things in life takes time, and a lot of effort, but once its all figured out and then we have to change it all to start something new, its not so welcome always coz the figuring out process starts all over again.

Before hitting the sack and going to sleep, I always look for my comfort position, the one which makes me relax, and gets me to sleep easily. I think it is the same when it comes to many things in life.We look for our comfort zones and try hard to create a cocoon for ourselves and once we find that cozy place we don't want to get out of it so easily.

But things get tiring and boring. Humans need change in order to keep themselves interested and occupied. Once a thing is figured out it doesn't carry so much appeal anymore coz there's nothing new to do and life becomes a dull routine. So without knowing, we do crave for a change. We like exploring new things and quench our thirst for knowledge. We want to feel like we have figured it all out, although life isn't all that easy :P

In this process we sometimes find that we have to let go and lose some things in order to create space for the new things we desire. And that is something we have not bargained for. We do not suspect that at first but a change always demands some sacrifices on our part. So sometimes we go back to our dull routines. It all depends on how badly we want a change and how willing we are to sacrifice some things which we love the most.

It takes time and a moment comes where we have to make a choice. While some choose to stay back in their comfort zones some prefer to get out there and grab some adventure. The people who chose to stay back are not lazy or incompetetive and the people who left are not the great persons either. It all depends on our perspective.

Whatever may be your choice I feel that letting go is difficult and though we do it, there comes the part where we have to move on which is painful, so we restrict, block it, and fight it but moving on is the only way we grow and learn. When we're kids we always want the same school, the same toys, the same friends, and living in the same place forever etc., but we grow and we're not kids anymore, and we change based on a lot of factors affecting us as we grow, and we find that we no longer want the same things. Surprising! but we did make a change and that change helped us become more polished and matured.

Change helps us grow as persons and gives us an idea of the big picture. So I'd say, get out there if you must. Try to bring small changes in your life instead of one big adventure all at once. Its OK to get out of your comfort zones once in a while and peek out. You might even like it; you'll never know until you try it.

Rads, so very true.. Especially, as you mention, we all go thorough it.. One reason (my personal view)I have felt is partly due to our culture and our upbringing. The fact that we virtually live our entire lives with our family and close friends, makes us hesitant to go out against the norm and accept a life to start all over again.

I guess, at some point, we extend this family zone to our work, our lives and eventually our children.. Good or bad, not one to challenge, but yes, it certainly helps.. Not necessary that life is only about money and power

Well written! Change is what keeps us going, otherwise we would all end up living one boring life!

If you are not open to change, the world will change uncomfortably around you:) How true that change is at the same time discomfiting as well as exciting

Hi Rads

Sometimes the letting Go and Change are inevitable...Like you have to leave home when you go to college...Girls usually leave home when they get married....You lose your monthly salary when you decide to start your own venture...But as you said change is needed...Thats y we have things like movies and vacation which dont drastically change our routine but provide that little spice called change !

@Rajesh: I know it is not a norm to embrace change but sometimes its inevitable and its better to prepare ourselves for it rather than sulking later.

@jaish_vats: So true, movies and tv shows are a good example that help us deviate from our routine lives for atleast a little while.

change is inevitable and every time we accept the change we increase the radius of our comfort zone which helps us to grow as a person

@animesh: True dat! but getting ourselves to experience change is the difficult part..once that's achieved then it becomes our comfort zone within no time.
